Rickenbacker 4001 bass

With its dated design, stereo jack (for a unit no one ever uses), chrome pickup cover, and bridge mute (every owner seems to have removed both) somehow this is still the archetypal Rickenbacker bass. Older and slightly different electronically and cosmetically than its replacement, the 4003, it also has a neck built for flat wound strings, though I have only used round wounds on this as of 1985 (the bass is a '76). I am not in any way recommending you do this. Your results may vary.

The modern 4004 is superior with its humbucking pickups and less clutter, yet this design is what everyone wants in a Rickenbacker. The 4001 has less low end than others, but has a tone unlike others as well and that's what this bass is all about-punch and sustain. Any player simply holding a Rickenbacker realizes the craftsmanship is second to none. The finish is a unique company secret and the wood is superb.

What no one seems to realize is how to pronounce Rickenbacker correctly (rhymes with Packer).
